Parts of Medicare

Part A

"Hospital Insurance"

Medicare Part A (Hospital) is part of Original Medicare along with Medicare Part B (Medical). It helps cover inpatient care in hospitals, skilled nursing facility care for short-term rehabilitation, hospice care, and home health care.

Part B

"Medical Insurance"

Medicare Part B is a part of "Original Medicare" which is made up of two parts: Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B. It helps cover services from doctors and other health care provides, outpatient care, home health care, durable medical equipment, and many preventive services.

Part D

"Prescription Drug Coverage"

Medicare Part D helps cover a variety of prescription drugs, even those for conditions such as cancer. You join a Medicare drug plan in addition to Original Medicare, or you get it by joining a Medicare Advantage Plan with drug coverage. Plans that offer Medicare drug coverage are run by private insurance companies that follow rules set by Medicare.

Medicare Supplement

"Medigap"

Medicare Supplement insurance (also known as Medigap) is offered by private insurance companies to help supplement some of the healthcare costs not covered by Original Medicare (Part A and B).

Original Medicare vs Medicare Advantage

When you first sign up for Medicare and during certain times of the year, you can choose which way to get your Medicare coverage. There are 2 main ways:

Original Medicare Medicare Advantage
"Part A + B" "Part C"
Original Medicare is made up of Medicare Part A and B Offered by private insurance companies, Medicare Advantage is an alternative to Original Medicare.  These plans typically bundle Part A, Part B and Part D
You can add a separate Medicare drug plan (Part D) for prescription drug coverage Plans may have lower out-of-pocket costs than Original Medicare
You can use any doctor or hospital that takes Medicare in the US In most cases, you will need to use doctors and hospitals who are in your plan's network
You may supplement your coverage and help pay for extra costs by purchasing Medicare Supplement (Medigap) Plans may offer additional coverage that Original Medicare does not
